Gary Witham, Sarah Galvani, Sam Wright, Gemma A. Yarwood
R3,844 Discovery Miles 38 440 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Focussing on end-of-life care for people who use, or have used, substances, this book explores their social and health care needs and the multiple disadvantages they have often experienced, discussing the complexities around access to care that result. Presenting models of good practice, case studies and empirically based evidence, Substance Use, End-of-Life Care is informative, rigorous and useful for policy and practice development. The first section foregrounds the personal experiences of people living with substance use, their families and friends, and the health and social care professionals who work with them. The second section looks at how health inequalities can impact people in need of palliative care, including chapters on health literacy, mental health and learning disabilities. The final section explores social challenges that may be experienced, including homelessness, sex work, racism and incarceration. This interdisciplinary volume is essential for researchers, practitioners, students and educators working around substance use, mental health and palliative and end-of-life care, who are looking for guidance and a reference for their work in supporting people at the end of their lives who have multiple and often complex needs.

Supporting People with Alcohol and Drug Problems - Making a Difference (Paperback, New): Sarah Galvani Supporting People with Alcohol and Drug Problems - Making a Difference (Paperback, New)
Sarah Galvani
R741 Discovery Miles 7 410 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Social workers and other social care professionals regularly face the challenges of working with people with alcohol and other drug problems. Yet many receive little, if any, training for working with these issues. As substance use and its social impact on communities and families rises up the political agenda, this book offers a timely support for social workers and other social care staff working in this area. Supporting people with alcohol and drug problems addresses the current gap in social work and social care education. It provides a combination of research evidence, policy frameworks, and practical hints and tips for good social work practice. Based around practice examples supplied by social workers from both adults' and children's social care, it combines knowledge with action. It also provides an important introduction to the evidence base on assessment, intervention and partnership working with specialist substance use colleagues. This book is for all those working in children's and adults' social work and social care settings who are working with people who use, or have problems with, alcohol and other drugs.

Women's Perspectives (Paperback): Sarah Galvani Women's Perspectives (Paperback)
Sarah Galvani
R2,115 Discovery Miles 21 150 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The primary objective of this research was to understand what role women thought alcohol played in their partners' violence to them. It aimed to: 1) question whether women blamed alcohol for their partners' violence, 2) establish whether the women made allowances for their partners' violence because of their partners' drinking, 3) determine the extent to which the women believed alcohol played a key role in such violence, 4) explore any differences in the women's beliefs about alcohol's role in violence when it was directed at others, and when it was directed at them, 5) develop theory, grounded in the women's views, that offers an explanation for alcohol's role in the violence they experienced. In-depth, semi-structured, interviews were conducted with 20 women who suffered violence or abuse from their partners. Due to the subject of this research and the absence of women's views in research on this subject, a grounded theory approach was used, located within a feminist research framework. The study concluded that while the women accept that alcohol has disinhibiting effects, they do not blame alcohol for their partners' violence and abuse.
